Behind the Scenes at Macy's Passport Show

Danville stylista/mom heads backstage at Macy's huge fall fashion show in San Francisco.

Stellar hair stylist and owner of Phoenix Salon, in Walnut Creek, Julie Brun (pictured at right)  invited me back stage for a glimpse of the behind the scenes action at the Macy’s Passport show in San Francisco in late September. With a team from her salon, Brun worked alongside William Soriano, the key stylist that designed and created all the wonderful looks that breezed by on the runway. Soriano currently operates W’s Salon in San Jose on Santana Row as well as trotting the globe styling hair for the couture shows in Milan and Paris,

More than 60 models, dancers, and greeters were among those that were primped and styled backstage. Brun along with make up artists from MAC invested about 10 hours to get these fabulous looks ready. Think wavy ringlet curls  with “ I didn’t fuss with it that much” perfection, a few edgy punk style cuts, show stopping wigs that accented the rocker edge duds capped off with the men’s look tousled, relaxed and sexy.

Brun says that she finds the experience of a big production fashion show creatively challenging and a whole lot of fun. She enjoys the idea of a team collectively being responsible for the overall look that walks the runway. It's a creative, spontaneous and super high energy experience.

Levi's, Rachel Roy, Hugo Boss, American Rag, and Calvin Klein were among the featured collections, one major highlight was the pounding performance by the Harajuku dancers, who were there to promote the super fragrance created by mega music star, Gwen Stefani.

This was a rare opportunity for this fashion slave to take a look all the preparation and madness that goes on backstage at a big fashion show. In the end I walked away with a new perspective and I got a real sense of what the Macy’s Passport show is all about, great fashion paired with a whole lot of fun and a huge dose of compassion—the annual event has raised millions for the fight against AIDS.
